soothing darkness, 2020

there’s a darkness that can only be entered
through trees.

it’s soothing.

masks crackle till they crumble
and vanish in the clearings.

that darkness is unsettling
because it shows our internal maps,
that far from orienting us towards imposed constellations,
they have made us lost
because those maps we received
altered our compasses.

among trees,
darkness
shows us maps on bark
and directions on roots.
it points out that our presence and our veins
carry blood with history
and bloody stories
that still reverberate in our pulse.

it is in that darkness
that we recover our compass
and we re-member that,
among the worst of silences
is the one that happens in broad daylight
among flames and whispers.
